Nokia N97 is a touch screen mobile phone in the Nseries of smartphones by Nokia, with a fold-out QWERTY keyboard.

Announced on 2 December 2008, the N97 is Nokia's second touchscreen phone (after the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic) based on the Symbian OS S60 5th edition platform.

The Nokia N97 was released in US flagship stores on 9 June 2009 and on 26 June 2009 was released worldwide. In September 2009 it was reported that two million N97 handsets had been sold in three months following its release.

The N97 ships with trial versions of Quick Office, Adobe reader, Boingo and JoikuSpot Premium as well as Nokia's own Ovi Maps and Ovi store.

The initial software had mixed reception, prompting the release of new firmware in October 2009. Nokia released the new firmware with kinetic scrolling for the N97 to address the major issues present in the firmware the device launched with.

Since October 2009 the N97 Mini is available which is a downsized version of the original N97.

Operating times

Informal tests have shown that the battery can last nearly two days with regular use of the phone's various features for the original N97. Nokia quote the following claimed operating times

Talk time: Up to 6.0 hours (3G), 9.5 hours (GSM)
Standby time: Up to 17 days (3G), 18 days (GSM)
Video playback: Up to 4.5 hours (offline mode)
Video recording: Up to 3.6 hours (offline mode)
Music playback: Up to 40 hours (offline mode)

Applications and options

With the optional DVB-H Nokia Mobile TV Receiver, SU-33W it is possible to watch television on the phone.

The device can run Skype with an application from the Ovi store. It is compatible with Nokia's N-Gage games.

Marketing

The phone can be seen in the beginning of the music video for I Gotta Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas when two of the members — Taboo and apl.de.ap — are checking their DipDive and text messages.

Nokia N97 Mini

The N97 Mini is a downsized version of the N97 and has been available since October 2009. The N97 Mini downsized some features of the original N97, such as 8 GB of storage memory, 3.2 inch touchscreen, removal of FM transmitter, and a shorter battery life. It includes however a bigger internal (phone) memory and an improved keyboard. It uses the 2.0 Nokia N97 software by default. Here under are some major changes listed in a table.

A limited edition called the N97 mini Raoul Limited Edition has been released in relation with fashion house FJ Benjamin and the Raoul brand. It also features the new Fashion Asia widget and went on sale in late October 2009 in Malaysia and Singapore.

Reception

Older firmware issues
Common criticisms of the original N97 were the relative lack of RAM and free disk space on the C drive. With only around 50MB of free RAM available after boot, the phone can become sluggish and close programs in order to conserve memory. Many first part applications also will only install on C: and with around 50MB of free space, this is used quickly as it is also where temporary OS files are placed. This issue was resolved in the N97 mini as the user often has over 250MB of free space on C drive. A memory mapping alteration from firmware version 20 allowed applications to use less RAM and free it up better, helping to ease the strain of a lower amount of free RAM to the end-user.

Anssi Vanjoki, EVP of Markets at Nokia, admitted that quality control in software has been an issue for this device, saying "it has been a tremendous disappointment in terms of the experience quality for the consumers", though, according to Vanjoki, later repaired by firmware updates.

Other criticisms
On occasion, the camera lens cover of the original N97 can cause scratches on the lens. Nokia has acknowledged that on many devices the cover is mounted too closely to the lens so that dust and debris can cause scratches. On later models however, this issue seems to have been resolved. The N97 mini does not have a lens cover.

The user interface of the S60 5th edition software platform, built on top of Symbian OS 9.4, has been criticized by the site TechRadar as inconsistent because menu items require two taps to be activated.

When compared to the original N97, the cheaper N97 mini was reviewed as an improvement, especially its keyboard. In spite of the generally lukewarm reviews the phone sold well.

The Nokia N97 mini is a very versatile full-featured device, nicely balanced with with hardly any serious holes in its specs sheet. What's best about it, is that "mini" moniker is certainly not a negative one. The N97 mini is in the size range of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and it's in fact thinner despite the slide out keyboard.

The N97 mini build quality and materials are on a exacting high level and we're glad the S60 touch UI is moving forward too. The UI has gone a long way since we first tried it on the 5800. Granted, there are still some inconsistencies and home screen widgets and flick scrolling or not, some people will scoff at the oddities of the UI.

What's good about the relatively new OS edition is that the Ovi Store is really picking up speed, which is great news for the N97 mini. The key aspect of an app store is that it lets users make full use of their phone. Without one a smartphone is pretty much left high and dry unless you go the extra length of searching and researching third party apps. The current selection of apps available for S60 5th is growing and the in-store experience is similar to what Android offers - and that's a compliment.

Well, all that being said, it's time we introduce the competition. The Motorola MILESTONE (or DROID in the US), certainly has drool-worthy features. Android 2.0 Eclair is stirring up a lot of excitement, although not getting the free Google Maps Navigation is a hard blow (it's US only for now). The rest of the specs though will certainly make the N97 mini sweat it.

If it's the social networking features that you're after, the Motorola DEXT is another Android alternative. Instead of Eclair, it runs the previous incaranation of the OS, but it's seriously spiced up with Motorola's MOTOBLUR interface.

The HTC Touch Pro2 doesn't have the 5MP camera but the bigger, high resolution screen and great Office integration will win over the business crowd. It's a bit on the heavy side, and we didn't quite like that about it.

The Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO (another seriously large handset) fetches a premium price tag, but the appeal of a 3.5" WVGA AMOLED screen is undeniable. DivX support and Office document editing out of the box make it a phone that can do both work and play. And if these WinMo phones cross the price line you've set for yourself, check out the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 - it's noticeably lighter on your wallet.

And here's one for the maximalists - the current Nokia headliner, the N900. It blurs the lines between UMPC and smartphone to the point where buying two devices makes little sense.

The Nokia N97 mini certainly lives up to the reputation its bigger brother already established. We certainly appreciated its solid and enjoyable user experience along with its minute and pocketable size and will certainly win the hearts of many Symbian users who will feel right at home with it.

JoikuSpot Light is a free limited edition of JoikuSpot that shares your phone's 3G internet connection over WiFi (WLAN) to laptops and other WiFi devices. For a full feature set, you have to purchase the full JoikuSpot Premium at the Ovi Store.

The trial version on Nokia N97 mini supports only HTTP browsing, whereas the Premium one has more secure browsing plus VPN support.

World Traveler is a handful open platform application developed by Psiloc that is aimed to make the traveler's life easier. The program offers four services - weather, world clock, currencies, and world map. More about this piece of software to be found here.

AccuWeather for Nokia N97 mini is a Widget, which provides users with weather information for global locations including current conditions, 4-day forecasts, radar or satellite images, 15-day calendar view for a quick check of upcoming weather, hourly forecasts in graph format for visual display of temperature and conditions. It is also displayed on the home screen tab.

Amazon is a simple application with different categories. There is also a search engine, which opens results directly in the Amazon site. You are also allowed to choose in which country you'd like to look for an item, which is great for the local buyers.

AP Mobile, which was announced this month with the launch of Nokia N97, is an application that enables users to choose their news, offering personalized delivery of content set according to their preferences. Consumers can scroll through stories and AP photo galleries as well as watch AP videos. Interesting images, videos or news can be directly shared via Twitter or Delicious.

Bloomberg application brings you up to date financial information. It has four tabs - news, markets, my stocks, and search section. If you are into finances, you can find out more about it at their website.

The final noteworthy app is the Reuters Slideshow, which gets you galleries from the mobile version of Reuters.com. It's not a news application, it just displays images from the several available categories with short explanatory texts.

The Elle application serves up news bits from the fashion world, interviews, horoscopes and lots and lots of photos. CNN Video is a more serious app, which lets you watch videos from CNN news reports.

ESPNsoccernet is invaluable to soccer fans - it has schedules, news, results, everything about soccer championships around the world. Metro is yet another source of world news.

And there are other apps, but you get the point - the Nokia N97 mini comes with just about the most preloaded apps we've seen.

There are no preinstalled games on the Nokia N97 mini. None. Not even the so popular Snakes. That's a real shame.

The Ovi Store has free games to offer, but if you're going to put a Games shortcut on the top level of the main menu, like Nokia did here, they should have at least preloaded a couple of those titles.

Ovi Maps 3.0 comes to back up the GPS

Nokia N97 mini comes with a built-in GPS receiver and judging on our experience it's a sensitive unit but nothing spectacular. The handset managed to acquire satellite lock from cold start in about good 8-10 minutes upon the first attempt (A-GPS turned off at the time).

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic had it quicker, but still after you get the satellite lock, keeing it locked is not an issue for N97 mini even in dense urban environments.

The large high-resolution screen sounds like a serious premise for reasonable use as a dedicated navigation unit. Unfortunately, the N97 mini has only 10-day trial voice guided navigation (region dependant) and you need to pay for more.

The phone comes with Ovi Maps 3.0 Touch preinstalled (the rebranded Nokia Mpas). As you might have guessed this is merely a touch-enabled version of the standard Nokia Maps 3.0 application. It offers extensive map coverage for free but you do need to pay for most of its extra features such as traffic information or city guides.

As we just mentioned you will also have to buy the voice-guided navigation license, should you pick the application for the purpose. At least the actual purchase itself is quite simple directly via the phone interface. If you prefer an alternative navigation software, you might want to carefully look around for a compatible version.

The touch-enabled Ovi Maps application itself is doing pretty well in terms of features too. It has four different view modes including satellite and hybrid maps. Those however do need an internet connection. The more regular 2D and 3D view modes are also at hand.

The route planning algorithm is also rather easy to customize to best suit your preferences. Toll roads and motorways can be avoided and so can tunnels and ferries. Route selection can be set to either fastest or shortest. The app is also usable for pedestrian navigation or you can switch the GPS receiver off and use the phone as a hand-held map.

One of the gripes we had with Maps 2.0 was the lack of "Go to my location" shortcut On the positive side, panning and zooming in the maps is really fast and the high-res screen is capable of showing quite a lot of data.

The overall impression with GPS navigation on Nokia N97 mini is positive but, having in mind that a 1-year voice-guided navigation costs a lot and we are not sure whether many people will go for that. But who knows - with an ample screen like that it might easily replace a standalone navigation system.

Third-party applications and Ovi Store

When the 5800 XpressMusic first launched, there were very few third party applications available. But now, the S60 5th edition army has grown in numbers and the Ovi Store is fully operational and hosts over a thousand apps and games compatible with the N97 mini.

Browsing the Ovi Store, you can choose between several sections - Applications, Games, Audio and Video content, Personalization, Recommended and of course, My Stuff, which shows you the apps you've already installed.

The structure of the Ovi Store client is simple - a list with the name and logo for each app (or podcast, or whatever), the category it's in (Entertainment, Utilities, etc), price and a three star rating.

Selecting an app, gives you more details - a description, info on size, reviews by people who have tried it, the ability to write a review yourself or sent the description page to a friend, a list of related apps and a Report issue button, which helps you report fraud, spam, abuse, etc., but not bug reports or feature requests.

Searching the Store is quite easy if the Recommended section and the Related apps list doesn't get you what you're looking for.

Our Nokia N97 mini comes preinstalled with a load of third party applications. Some of them are very handy tools for reading news, handling social networks, weather forecasts, etc.

Of course, since this is Symbian we are talking about, you can also pay a visit to some of the numerous sites for software available online. Here is one to get you started, while a simple Google search will show you the rest.

You can download the apps straight from your phone or from your desktop computer and than transfer them as you find fit.

Finally, Nokia Download! is still available, but when we tried it, it failed to load the load the list of available content. It's obsolete now, anyway.

Nokia N97 mini - Connectivity reaches for perfection

Smartphones are usually well-heeled in terms of connectivity. Nokia N97 mini makes no exception: all contemporary means of data transfer are supported.

All kinds of network connectivity are at the user disposal - GPRS, EDGE and 3G with HSDPA. Both the 2G and 3G connections are quad-band, making the N97 mini quite the global phone. There are some carriers with rare frequencies that are not supported, but for the most part you should enjoy the speediest connectivity in the area.

Both USB and Bluetooth are version 2.0 and the latter naturally also sports A2DP. Wi-Fi with UPnP support is also at hand. There is no shortcut key for the Wi-Fi manager, but it can be easily found in the Connectivity menu and connecting to a WLAN network is two taps away.

Finally, the Nokia N97 mini has a memory card slot, which can usually give you the fastest data transfer rates and can take up to 16GB cards.

Web browser needs some tuning

The web browser of Nokia N97 mini is about the same as on the 5800 XpressMusic. It's a nice browser indeed, but hardly as touch-optimized as we would have liked.

Panning and kinetic scrolling are the only things that are done by sweep gestures here, and zoom/out zoom are controlled by tapping on the screen twice. There's a zoom bar for smoother zooming, but using it requires too many taps. There are no options for fit-to-width or fit-to-height, which makes convenient positioning of the text on screen a hard job.

The web browser has much room for improvement

There's an overview mode (a minimap), but bringing it up requires two taps, which is exactly one more than it should have been. And while the browser has support for multiple pages opened at the same time, this only works for popups - you can't open a new tab manually and dial in a new web address in a second tab.

At least the page rendering algorithm is quite good, making all the pages look as if browsed from a desktop PC. The high resolution is also a welcome bonus here, as it allows more content to fit on the screen.

Finally, the web browser has full support for both Flash and Java, which means that you can enjoy flash videos straight from your browser without having to use the mobile versions of sites like YouTube (which was recently redesigned by the way).

So, generally speaking, the second S60 touch-browser is nicely equipped but fails to satisfy some common ergonomics shortcomings.

Organizer duly covered

The S60 organizer didn't obviously get too much effort beyond the actual touch optimization. Well, developers were right up to a point but, given the progress of most competitors, some new functionality would have been nice - like copy/paste of events in the calendar or a new calculator.

The calendar has four different view modes - monthly, weekly, daily and to-do, which allows you to check up all your To-Do entries regardless of their date. There are the same four types of events available for setting up as on S60 3rd edition - Meeting, Memo, Anniversary and To-do. Each event has unique fields of its own, and some of them allow an alarm to be activated at a preset time to act as a reminder.

Mobile office is also very well geared, with preinstalled applications able to open Word, Excel and PowerPoint files seamlessly. The PDF viewer was preinstalled on our unit but it's only 15-days trial version (duh!) and after that you need to buy it from the Nokia download center.

Only viewing of documents is supported out of the box

Unluckily, editing documents is not supported by the included Quickoffice version. If you would like editing enabled you will have to get the upgrade from the Nokia Download center for a fee.

The organizer package also includes a great unit converter, calculator and voice recorder, as well as the Notes application.

Some of the other organizer apps

The Active notes is advanced application for managing notes. It allows you to attach pictures, sound files or video clips to your memo and has nice and touch-friendly user interface. It's not so daily used app, but still it will find its fans for sure.

The alarm application allows you to set up as many alarms as you want, each with its own name, trigger day and repeat pattern. If this seems too complicated, there is a quick alarm setup where all you do is set the time and you're good to go. This is quite convenient for, say, setting up your wake-up alarm.

In addition, the number of alarms is not limited. Thanks to the built-in accelerometer you can also snooze the alarm by simply flipping your phone, much like with the Nokia 8800 Arte and 5800 XpressMusic.

Nokia N97 mini - The camera has its ups and downs

Nokia N97 mini has a 5 MP camera with a maximum image resolution of 2592x1944 pixels. Carl Zeiss optics and the dual-LED flash promise nice photos with a lot of detail. Let's see is it true.

The camera UI is similar to the one found in 5800 XpressMusic and a carbon copy of the one in N97 - the few changes made are hardly for the better. All the settings are squeezed in a common menu, except for the flash, which has its own dedicated shortcut. We understand that a tabular layout isn't the easiest of thing this kind of devices but some of the more important features could have had their own shortcuts too.

The camera UI

At least the range of settings that the Nokia N97 mini offers is extensive enough: from manual white balance and ISO to exposure compensation, sharpness and contrast. Various effects are also at hand, labeled as Color Tones.

Unlike the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, which needed a firmware update for the purpose, in N97 mini camera geo-tagging is present out of the box.

Nokia N97 mini lacks all the modern features that the other competing manufacturers are using such as face detection, smile detection and even blink prevention - not to mention in-camera face retouching or the likes.

The Nokia N97 mini viewfinder doesn't occupy the whole screen - a bar on the right is reserved for the touch controls. You have a settings button that launches a semi-transparent overlay of all available shooting options, a dedicated Flash button and an on-screen shutter key.

The on-screen shutter key seems absolutely redundant - it doesn't have a half press/full press action to properly handle auto focus. It would've been way better to have a Quick Settings button instead.

The picture quality is pretty decent in our books. First of all the picture detail is enough to qualify the photo as a very nice one. The next thing is the noise reduction algorithm is mature enough and finds a good balance between noise levels and detail. There is no purple fringing and the white balance and auto ISO settings worked just fine.

If there is one thing to complain about in the Nokia N97 mini photos, it would be the color balance. Most of the photos have generally warmer colors and the yellow tint is at times too much to swallow. Bear in mind though that quite a lot point and shoot cameras are tuned to reproduce colors warmer than they really are since this makes the photos look more vibrant and appealing to the end-users.

The dynamic range is also not quite impressive with highlight clipping a bit more frequent that we would have liked.

Video recording

The camcorder interface doesn't differ from the still camera much.

The N97 video capture quality is OK. Colors and white balance turn out just fine, but the compression seems too aggressive in most of the clips and produces many noticeable video artifacts.

Plus the other manufacturers are already offering better video quality at higher resolution - take Samsung, for instance, and their Samsung S8300 UltraTOUCH or even Omnia HD. Not to mention the 120fps and slow-motion videos that are already standard issue stuff on the higher segment LG and Samsung phones.

So in essence, Nokia N97 mini offers a three-year old camera technology remixed as a brand fresh product for quite a steep price tag. Image quality is still among the top-of-the-line but for a 5 megapixel cameraphone.

Five megapixels don't count as high-end anymore, not to mention the lack of all the current popular features such as face detection, tracking or manual focus, touch focus, smile shutter, blink detection and the likes.

Video recording is another area where Nokia have made no progress for the past several years. So if you've set your eyes on N97, we really hope that the camera is not the most important feature for you as Omnia HD goes for pretty much the same asking price.

Nokia N97 mini - Music player does the job

The music player (identical to the 5800 XpressMusic one) is very similar to the S60 3rd edition versions. A few cosmetic changes here and there and touch-optimization is all that sets it apart.

Not that the music player isn't capable enough or something - it surely has more than enough functionality. However some more eye-candy would have been quite welcome. After all, touch interfaces are usually mostly about being fun to use and nice to look at.

Your music library is automatically sorted by artist, album, genre and composer and searching tracks by gradual typing is available. You can also create your own playlists in no time.

The process of adding tracks to the library is as simple as choosing the refresh option. You won't need to do that if you upload the music via the proprietary PC Suite application.

The Nokia N97 mini music player

With the huge number of supported formats you will hardly ever come across an audio file that the phone won't handle. Album art is also supported and if you don't like the default sound of the device you can enhance it by applying one of the five equalizer presets and if they seem insufficient you can create new ones in a matter of seconds.

Quite naturally, the player can also be minimized to play in background. In this case a tab appears on the stand-by screen indicating the currently running track.

Splendid audio quality

Just as we expected, the audio output of Nokia N97 mini differs little from the excellent Nokia N97. The slight change is the intemodulation distortion, which reduced in half and is now only slightly below average.

The handset did excellently in all other parts of our test, achieving some excellent scores.

The frequency response of the N97 mini is almost identical to the one delivered by Nokia N97. It is pretty close to the perfect, the greatest deviating being only 0.32dB.

The noise level, dynamic range and stereo crosstalk readings are also very good, comparable to the best in class. Here go the results so you can compare it to some of the other handsets we have tested.

No DivX and XviD dooms video player

Watching a video on the Nokia N97 mini is generally a pleasure due to the relatively big screen. The built-in video player has decent functionality but only supports a very limited number of codecs, no DivX and XviD out of the box. As to third party solutions, mixed success is reported in terms of getting compatible players to run on the 5800 XpressMusic or the N97 mini.

The built-in video player

The Nokia PC suite, actually Ovi Suite now, has a built-in application that automatically converts all kinds of video files to the format and resolution your phone supports. The automatic converter though seems to compress the videos too much even at the highest quality setting and they look over pixilated but so far it's the easiest way of getting video to your Nokia touch handset.

The video player itself only works in fullscreen landscape mode but, since anything else would have made the widescreen display useless, this is understandable. When in fullscreen, a press on the screen shows the controls which are normally hidden.

The amply sized high-res screen is also more than welcome for truly enjoying your clips. With QWERTY keyboard slid out, the Nokia N97 mini looks just like made for video watching.

Nokia have called their video app (which is actually a Real player in disguise) Video & TV but as it turns out, the TV is actually videos that you can stream from Nokia or Reuters. One can only wonder how YouTube was left out of this streaming video equation.

FM radio comes with RDS

The FM radio on Nokia N97 mini has a neat and simple interface and can automatically scan and save the available stations in your area. It also has RDS support and automatic scanning for an alternative frequency. This means that if you travel the N97 mini will take care of auto-switching to the frequencies of your selected radio station.

The RDS is the best part of Nokia N97 mini FM radio. The radio station name gets displayed with cool effects across the whole screen, while the rest of the RDS readings are printed in nicely legible text on a line at the bottom. Perhaps we would have preferred this font a bit larger, but it doesn't really matter that much.

The messaging menu is yet another part of the Symbian S60 UI that hasn't been modified at all compared to what we saw on Nokia 5800.

Nokia N97 mini supports all common message types - SMS, MMS and email. They all share a common intuitive editor which by this point should be quite familiar to everyone. When composing an SMS, a counter is displayed of characters left to the limit of 160. An indicator in brackets is showing the number of separate parts the message will be divided into for sending.

Once you insert some multimedia content, or an email address is inserted as recipient, the counter is replaced by a data counter showing the size of your email.

The N97 mini uses a common intuitive editor for all your messages

Nokia N97 mini also features the dedicated editor for instant recording of audio messages. Much like with Symbian S60 v3.2 you can either record the message on the spot or use a sound clip from the phone memory. The interface of all the messengers is quite similar too.

Delivery reports can be turned on - they pop up once the message reaches the addressee, and are then saved in a separate folder in the messaging sub-menu. When you are exiting the message editor without having sent the message, you get prompted to save it in Drafts or discard it.

Here might just be the right time to mention the input options on Nokia N97 mini. The handset offers a standard alphanumeric on-screen keypad in both portrait and landscape mode. There's no on-screen QWERTY, either full or the SureType-like version.

Of course the hardware QWERTY is here to solve all your problems. It's just three rows and you need to use the function key for accessing the numbers and symbols, but that's no biggie.

Finally, the N97 mini offers handwriting recognition, which did a rather decent job, recognizing almost all the letters we scribbled in the box. You can improve its performance by taking the handwriting training - where you actually show the handset how you write each different letter.

The email client is really nice, able to meet almost any emailing needs. The easy setup we found in the latest Nokia handsets is also available with the N97 mini.

Setting up email is easy

If you are using any public email service (it has to be among the over 1000 supported providers), all you have to do is enter your username and password to start enjoying email on the go. The phone downloads all the needed settings to get you going in no time.

Besides, it now prompts choosing whether you prefer POP or IMAP access to mail providers that support both. With the previous version selection was automatic. Nicely done!

Advanced email options

The email client can do it all

Multiple email accounts and various security protocols are supported, so you can bet almost any mail service will run trouble-free on your Nokia N97 mini.

The client can download headers only or entire messages, and can be set to automatically check mail at a given interval. A nice feature allows you to schedule sending email next time an internet connection is available. This can save you some data traffic charges since you can use the next available WLAN connection instead.

A feature that we really like is the ability to subscribe to different folders of the email account, like the Starred folder in Gmail. This can be very helpful if you've set up filters to automatically move messages to specific folders and keep your Inbox clean.

There is also support for attachments, signatures and generally, you can hardly think of something important that the Nokia N97 mini lacks. Furthermore with a screen resolution like this reading your emails is easy.

Great file manager

The file manager is yet another aspect where the pedigree counts big time. With the soft keys at the bottom you can almost forget that you are looking at a new device.

The Symbian file management system has been top notch for quite a while now, and you can hardly think of anything to change. The application can basically do anything you can think of with your files - moving, copying renaming, sorting or sending - you name it. You can also password-protect your memory card if you see fit.

The searching for a specific file or directory is also available with the phone. All you need to remember is a part of the desired name and where it was located (phone memory or memory card) the Nokia N97 mini will find it in no time.

Image gallery - not bad, but not great either

The gallery of Nokia N97 mini is yet another part of its interface that hasn't been dramatically changed compared to non-touch Symbian predecessors. It has neither the swanky 3D view mode, nor the customizable slideshow we are used to seeing in the Nseries.

You can go through your pictures (and videos as well) by sweeping your finger across the screen. Kinetic scrolling is enabled in the gallery view as well.

Opting between portrait and landscape mode is automatic, thanks to the built-in accelerometer. Unless you have that feature disabled, all you need to do to switch modes is to flip the phone sideways (or just to slide out the QWERTY keyboard).

Viewing a photo

Image zoom is controlled via either the volume rocker or an on-screen touch slider. In all other cases, images are displayed full screen. After you've cheked the details, to go to the next photo you always have to zoom all the way back, which might get annoying if you zoom in to often.

Overall, picture browsing is relatively fast, but the zooming is somewhat slow at least on the initial zooming step. The panning is worse than HTC's latest models and many of the other similar devices.

Nokia N97 mini uses a phonebook that's identical to what previous versions of the UI have offered. Except for the whole touch thingy, that is. The phonebook itself has virtually unlimited capacity and functionality is among the best we've seen.

Contacts can be freely ordered by first or last name and can naturally be searched by gradual typing of any of the names. You can also set whether the contacts from the SIM card, the phone memory and the service numbers will get displayed.

Editing a contact offers a great variety of preset fields and you can replicate each of them as many times as you like. You can also create new fields if you happen to be able to think of one. Personal ringtones and videos are also available for assigning. If you prefer, you may group your contacts and give each group a specific ringtone.

The Call log keeps track of your recent communications. The application itself comes in two flavors - accessed by pressing the Call key on the stand-by screen or from the main menu. The first one brings 20 call records in each of its tabs for outgoing, received and missed calls.

If you access the Log application from the main menu, you'll see a detailed list of all your network communications for the past 30 days. These include messages, calls and data transfers (even WLAN connections are included).

No smart-dial takes all the fun out of the telephony

We didn't experience any problems with the in-call performance of Nokia N97. Reception levels are good on both ends of calls, the earpiece is loud enough and there were no interferences whatsoever.

Voice dialing is an option with the N97 as with mostly any other phone. The voice dialing mode is activated once you press and hold the Call key. It is fully speaker-independent and doesn't require prerecording the names of your contacts. Bear in mind though, that if you have multiple numbers assigned to a contact, the first or the default one gets dialed.

Thanks to the built-in accelerometer you can silence an incoming call on the phone by simply flipping it over. Those feature was also available in 5800 XpressMusic and through third party application on the previous versions on the UI.

Making a call is very good. Thanks to the proximity sensor the screen turns off automatically while close to your head. There are four big buttons available - mute, hold, loudspeaker and end call. Form the options menu you can find more settings like lock screen and keys, switch to video call, new call and etc.

The problems that the original N97 had with answering and rejecting calls with the receiver keys are gone.

We also ran our traditional loudspeaker test on Nokia N97 mini. The handset scored a Very Good mark in our test. You might want to keep a closer look on it when you are in noisier environments.

Nokia N97 mini - Widgetized S60 UI

We stand by every word we said about the S60 5th and its approach to touchscreen. Long story short, the direct translation of D-pad and soft-key action into touch has its benefits but the result is hardly the most fluent and intuitive touchscreen interface.

Scrolling has been changed, thanks to a firmware update, and it's a great improvement over the previous scheme. Now you have kinetic scrolling (or flick scrolling as Nokia call it) and it's really smooth with nice elasticity at both ends of the scroll.

List menus still require a double click to activate, though, while icons do great with a single one. Really - go figure!

If you know your way around S60, you'll be quite at home with the N97 mini interface and you'll swear by it. But if you look at it more objectively maybe, just maybe, you will realize some things come out a tad better on other touchscreen handsets than they do on S60 5th.

The Nokia N97 mini, being the slightly shorter sibling of the N97, uses a widget-enabled homescreen, just like its taller bro. This is the only significant change since the 5800 XpressMusic and for now is the trademark of the N97 pair - other S60 5th edition phones don't have them.

They are the fad these days and their usability is unquestioned. They can't be the dramatic improvement you've been waiting for though.

It is also worth mentioning that, compared to the 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 mini has a tad snappier UI (thanks to the faster ARM 11 434 MHz processor perhaps). There weren't any major lags or holdups for the time of our review.

While the widgets are something new for the S60 5th edition, the menu structure is a d?j? vu - the same as in Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and not that different from 3rd edition. Icons are organized in a 3 x 4 grid or a list and you can freely reorder. Screen orientation can be set to change automatically. Sliding out the QWERTY keyboard makes the screen rotate as well.

Opening an item in any of the list submenus calls for two presses - one to select, and another one to confirm the action. Now that's something that you don't normally see often in touch phones. You get used to it with time, but the main issue here is that the interface logic is different when you deal with icons instead of lists - there just a single click does the job.

Here comes the homescreen

The homescreen layout of the N97 mini (not counting the widgets) is similar to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic version - all the status indicators are at the top, plus the clock and the calendar.

A single press on the clock starts the clock application (with an option for setting up an alarm) while tapping on the date opens a drop-down menu where you can either enter the calendar application or change the currently active profile.

Now, let's take a closer look at the widgets. If they are hidden, just sweep a finger across the screen and they'll show up. Another sweep will make them disappear.

You can have up to 5 widgets at a time displayed on the homescreen (you can't change the clock) and you can arrange them according to which you use most.

There are plenty of widgets to choose from - there are tools like the WLAN wizard, music player controls, a calendar or a widget with four favorite contacts (you can have two of those). The other widgets are linked to various sites and services - Amazon, Facebook, AccuWeather, Associated Press, CNN, Elle and quite a few more.

The Ovi Store comes in when you get bored of the preinstalled widgets, but will cover that in more length later.

Arranging widgets is easy and fun. You can remove some of them, add others, change their order (just drag and drop). If all 5 slots have been taken, you have to remove one or more widgets to make room.

Nokia N97 mini comes with 4 preloaded themes and most of them are really appealing. You can also download third party themes from the internet. As before, you can switch the themes effects on and off. Unfortunately, even if the transitions look kinda cool, they cause occasional lags when browsing the menu.

The functional elements on the sides of the Nokia N97 mini have an identical layout to that of its bigger brother. That means that the camera key and the dual volume button are on the right. The camera key is fine but the volume rocker feedback has quite some room for improvement.

The left side features the microUSB port and the screen lock slider. The stereo speakers are also here at the two edges. There is no protective cover for the USB slot so dust and dirt accumulation is pretty likely.

When you slide the Nokia N97 mini open, the three-row QWERTY keyboard pops up in front of your face. The keys are a bit smaller than on the original N97 but they are still large enough and will enough spacing to be comfortable even for larger-handed users.

The feedback levels are also great, increasing the typing speed even further. We aren't too thrilled about having only three rows on a QWERTY keyboard, but they got the rest of it right. The problem is that keys get a bit crowded with a three-row layout (having two chars each) and intensive usage of a modifier (the symbol key) is required.

The D-pad of the original N97 is removed in the N97 mini, replaced by four arrow keys. Placed on the right of the keyboard those are really comfortable, with the nearby enter key compensating for the lack of a confirming center.

This arrangement has allowed the Space key to be shifted a bit to the middle, where it is much easier to reach. Considering that this is one of the most frequently used keys when typing we count this as a major usability boost.

Under the battery cover lays another downgrade of Nokia N97 mini compared to the original N97. The BP-4D has 25% smaller capacity (1200 mAh) than the N97 battery. Understandably, its performance isn't quite as impressive too. The N97 mini should last for up to 320 hours of stand-by and 7 hours and ten minutes of talk-time in a 2G network or 310 hours of stand-by and 6 hours of talk time on UMTS.

In reality we had to charge our Nokia N97 mini every 36 hours but ours was nothing else than extensive torture. What regular users should expect is charging their handset every third day or something like that.

That means that whenever you need to change memory cards you will need to remove it, which causes some inconvenience. On the positive side the N97 mini can handle 16GB microSD cards which are the largest currently available on the market.

The build quality of the Nokia N97 mini is really satisfactory. With the addition of some metallic elements it is now even nicer to touch than the original N97. Unfortunately, the sliding mechanism issue of having uneven tension hasn't been solved. The spring is a bit too rigid at first followed by an all too sudden release that makes a loud banging noise. We have seen Nokia do a lot better than that.

At least this time the full specs quote visible on the back of the phone when it's slid open are gone.

There isn't too many differences between the retail packages of Nokia N97 mini and the original N97. There are a few omissions in order to keep the price lower but hardly anything a regular user would notice. Basically the content inside is covering all the essentials, without providing too many surprises.

You have the charger plus a data cable and a nicely designed handsfree that we see for the first time. It looks pretty cool but unofortunately is one-piece only so replacing the headphones while keeping the remote is not an option. At least there are several different ear-buds so you can find the one that best fits your ears.

There isn't a stylus included in the Nokia N97 mini retail package but we hardly miss that too much.

Nokia N97 mini measures 113 x 52.5 x 14.2 mm, totaling a volume of 75cc. Those numbers don't sound too impressive in isolation but compared to the 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9 mm of the original N97 they certainly are great.

Of course some trade-of were inevitable - like cutting down on display estate or losing the D-pad on the QWERTY keyboard, but all the main functionality is still there and you get a much more compact package.

In the smartphone QWERTY side-slider class the Nokia N97 mini easily ranks among the compact handsets. The non-touch E75 is the only handset that is noticeably more compact but it has quite a lot of other features discarded to reduce size.

The weight of 138g is another improvement over the original N97, which weigh the hefty 150g. The mini version still maintains its solid feel but weights less in your pocket. Yet the 12 gram difference will hardly be decisive for anyone. Obviously Nokia thought the same way - otherwise they would have used plastic for the battery cover again and reduced the weight even further.

Design and construction

Slid-close and in isolation you will hardly recognize that the N97 is a different model at all. There wasn't too much time for redesigning and the Nokia engineers preferred to spend it on the back panel.

We were happy enough with the original N97 design and our only regret was that its all-plastic construction was unfit for its high-end status and pricetag. Obviously Nokia paid attention and this time the battery cover material is metallic. The camera lens cover has also been removed.

We are also really pleased with the quality of the plastic used for the rest of the N97 mini body. It's the same as the one used for N86 8MP and the original N97. It is a real fingerprint-repeller, while at the same time looks sturdy enough to survive without many marks and scratches (under regular usage, of course).

The Nokia N97 mini front is mostly about the 16M-color resistive touchscreen. It has the same resolution as its bigger brother (360 x 640 pixels) but as we mentioned, its diagonal has shrunk from 3.5" to 3.2". That nHD resolution seems pretty sufficient to use for virtually any use but some users might still find it disadvantageous compared to the WVGA that some of the competitors have to offer.

The image quality of the Nokia N97 mini display is about the same as on the original N97. The smaller size makes it less impressive, of course, but the contrast and brightness levels are equal. Mind you, we won't be mad if Nokia chose the Samsung way and went to AMOLED screens for more of its flagships. Having that extra bit of contrast is a nice thing.

The Nokia N97 mini uses a resistive touchscreen, just like every other S60 touch-enabled Nokia so far. This means a bit of pressure on the screen is needed for a tap to be registered but allows the use of stylus and gloves.

The sensitivity of the Nokia N97 mini is on par with the competition, and save for the Samsung Jet and Pixon12, we haven't seen a resistive-touchscreen handset perform much better. Nokia seem to have done some tweaking to the screen so that now its responsiveness with fingers is better than the original N97. There is also haptic feedback with adjustable intensity, which we find really comfortable.

The sunlight legibility is equal on the two Nokia N97s - they are both excellent. We are glad that it has nothing to do with the mediocre sunlight legibility of Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and 5530 XpressMusic.

Touch-sensitive call and end keys plus a regular hardware menu key sit right below the screen. Their layout in the Nokia N97 mini is an exact copy of what we saw in the original Nokia N97.

The Nokia army of touchscreen smartphones gets larger by the hour and the Nokia N97 mini is surely one of the most interesting new recruits. The Finnish company has obviously reconsidered its priories and now focuses on optimization, rather than expansion with its flagships.

However the first high-end S60 touchscreen handset left enough room for another similar handset in the portfolio and Nokia feel that its downsized version is enough to fill the gap.

The N97 mini has quite a task on its hands, constantly being compared to the moe high ranking Nokia N97 even though it comes later to the market. As usually happens in such cases, the price difference that would have been present if both handsets were launched simultaneously is reduced and the balance of powers has shifted.

We’ve had two QWERTY Nokia smartphones on the SlashGear test-bench this past week, and the surprising thing is how differently the respective user experience is. Our Nokia E72 review went live earlier today; now we turn to the Nokia N97 mini, viewed by many – for better or for worse – as the Finnish company’s second attempt at the N97. Second-time lucky or still well short? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

To understand the N97 mini, you have to put it into context with the original N97 it’s a “miniaturised” version of. The Nokia N97 practically epitomises the difficulty in balancing hype, consumer anticipation, cutting-edge hardware and delivery schedules: when it was first announced in December 2008 it promised a compelling package of the latest in smartphone technology, but by the time it hit reviewers’ hands in June 2009 it proved to fall well short of expectations.

Since then Nokia have pushed out a significant new firmware release that addressed many issues with the original smartphone, and of course they’ve also delivered the N97 mini, a more compact version of the N97 intended to address many of its shortcomings. We pulled no punches in our N97 review, so the N97 mini has plenty of work to do in order to impress us.

Physically, as you might imagine, it’s a smaller phone. The original N97 is 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9 mm, tipping the scales at 150g, while the N97 mini is 113 x 52.5 x 14.2 mm and 138g. That means there’s less room for the display – which slips from 3.5- to 3.2-inches, though sticks at 640 x 360 resolution – but it also means it’s a far more pocket-friendly handset. Interestingly, there are minimal hardware concessions involved elsewhere: the N97 mini doesn’t have a sliding lens cover, but it does keep the 5-megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash, together with a front-facing camera for video calling. The GPS and A-GPS are still present, together with ambient light, orientation and proximity sensors, and connectivity doesn’t fall short either: the N97 mini is packed with quadband WCMDA 850/900/1900/2100 as well as Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi b/g, a microUSB 2.0 connection and a 3.5mm headphones socket.

You also still get the unusual form-factor, with a sliding-tilting display that is strongly spring-loaded. That reveals the redesigned keyboard, the biggest change of which is the removal of the D-pad on the left and the introduction of four regular arrow keys. We were scathing in our feedback of the N97’s keyboard, criticising its lack of travel and poor finger-feedback; the N97 mini’s ‘board is better, with buttons that are certainly more responsive than on its bigger sibling, while the missing D-pad means there’s less reaching to be done with the left thumb. Still, it’s not a home-run by any stretch of the imagination and there’s a sluggishness to the response that makes typing feel slower than on other hardware keyboards. Nokia have increased the size of the spacebar – which is still offset, and sits just underneath where your right thumb rests – and the function key is better placed on the far left rather than the far right.

Unfortunately you’re still stuck with the one-position screen angle, which is results in plenty of hand-tilting as you try to thumb-type and see the display at the best angle. The touchscreen itself uses a resistive panel rather than the currently fashionable capacitive, but is reasonably responsive and accurate nonetheless. OS is S60 5th edition, Nokia’s attempt to bring finger-friendliness to Symbian, and it remains a mixed bag. The recent firmware 2.0 update for the N97 also applies to the N97 mini, and addresses many of our original complaints, particularly in terms of the visual appeal and the introduction of “kinetic scrolling”.

It’s still not as attractive as, say, Palm’s webOS or the iPhone, and many of the menus still seem to merely be bigger – i.e. finger-sized – than they were before. Lists continue to respond differently to taps depending on whereabouts in the OS you are: settings, for instance, usually respond to a single tap, whereas lists of items (such as email messages) take one tap to select and another to open. We can partly see the logic in this, but when other platforms use the more intuitive press-and-hold to deliver the same, Nokia’s system begins to look unnecessarily fiddly.

The display aspect is less than ideal too, particularly when you’re dealing with emails. We can’t find any way to show the email list with sender and subject split across two lines, and as such you get both a sharply truncated name and very little of the subject line. It’s difficult to triage your inbox without actually going into the message itself, which adds a few unwanted steps to the process. On the plus side, the N97 mini does have extensive email account support, including the basic POP and IMAP together with Mail for Exchange, and where the E72 dropped the ball in dealing with our Exchange-like Kerio Mail Server, the mini handled it with no problems whatsoever. We did experience a couple of odd connection issues, however, where the smartphone would “forget” by which method it was meant to pull in new emails; we wish Nokia would make things a little more straightforward, using whatever the active connection is (whether WiFi or 3G) without the user needing to be so prescriptive.

Like the E72, the N97 mini’s browser supports full HTML with in-page Flash video, which means no separate app is required to play back YouTube content (among others). Of course there’s still no multitouch zooming, and instead the N97 mini uses double-tap to zoom; unfortunately webpage text doesn’t reflow accordingly, and despite the accelerometer the screen orientation doesn’t flip even if you turn the phone on its side, you have to push out the keyboard in order to get a landscape view. Still, pages render pretty much as you’d expect from a desktop browser.

Firmware 2.0 also brought with it the latest version of Nokia Maps, and as with the E72 it’s been a pleasing experience seeing what the rivals of Google Maps have come up with. The N97 mini includes a digital compass and locks onto a GPS signal quickly, while the app itself does a better job than its rival in presenting that data on-screen. Various map-types are provided, including a traffic overlay, and it’s just as easy to pull up walking directions as it is driving (though once the trial licence of pedestrian directions runs out, you’ll need to pay for the functionality). There are still no spoken guidance prompts, however, unlike the Google Maps Navigation beta for Android in the US.

Nokia have won many admirers over the past year or two with the quality of their cameras, and the N97 mini’s 5-megapixel autofocus shooter is reasonable. Our general dislike of LED flashes – which we find have a very narrow “sweet spot” outside of which they either over-saturate the subject or prove hopelessly lacking in power – is tempered by decent low-light performance with the flash switched off. Give the N97 mini an outdoor shot however and you’ll find acceptable results; we were also particularly impressed by the macro close-ups, with the phone automatically switching into the necessary mode to keep nearby subjects in crisp focus. The onboard 8GB of memory is less than the original N97’s 32GB, but slot in a microSD card and you’ll have up to 24GB to play with. You can find sample shots in the gallery below.

The camera will also shoot 30fps 16:9 aspect video in MPEG4 640 x 360 resolution, which turned out to be smooth and reasonably watchable. You can switch on the LED flash to act as a video light, though autofocus no longer works. Once you’ve shot a clip you can upload it to various media sharing sites, including Flickr and Nokia’s own Ovi gallery.

As for consuming media rather than producing it, the N97 mini has the same audio app as on the E72 only with larger, finger-accomodating icons. The interface is lacking in comparison to something like the iPhone, but it’s serviceable and there’s a link directly to Nokia’s Music Store (though not Comes With Music, which the company don’t offer on this handset) for on-device downloads. As with the N97 there’s an FM radio (which requires a wired headset be plugged in) but no FM transmitter; Nokia say the short-range transmitter – handy for in-car use – couldn’t be squeezed into the N97 mini’s reduced casing. Video playback is in a separate app, and consists of a simple folder-browsing UI for local content together with a Video Feeds browser which allows you to access streaming content.

Access to all of these apps is usually through the main menu, called up no matter where you are in the phone by pressing the single hardware button on the fascia. However, like its sibling, the N97 mini’s homescreen is made up of six rectangular widget panels which can be rearranged and edited. Among the options are standard shortcut bars – each offering room for four icons linking to your commonly-accessed apps – as well as frequent contact shortcuts, an AccuWeather forecast widget, Mail for Exchange widget and a clock with links to the alarm settings and calendar. There’s also a Facebook widget which ties into Nokia’s somewhat sluggish Facebook app. This shows galleries, wall posts and offers one-tap access to the camera and on-device gallery so as to make uploading shots easier, but is tardy in its responsiveness – especially when updating the Facebook wall – compared to similar apps on rival platforms.

Phone performance was strong, with the N97 mini tenacious with a signal. We experienced no dropped calls in all of our testing, and both parties reported clear and crackle-free audio. Battery life has proven slightly better than what you’d expect from a current-gen smartphone, capable of going two days with regular use (and judicious use of the peak/off-peak push email settings). Nokia quote up to 430 minutes of GSM talktime (240 minutes of WCDMA) or up to 320 hours of GSM standby (310 hours of WCDMA).

Build quality is better than the N97, with a sturdy case and touches of metal in the screen fascia and battery cover; we’re also quiet fans of the “cherry black” finish (though you can also get the N97 mini in “garnet”). Less impressive is the flex in the plastic screen surround up above the earpiece, though to be fair that’s our only real point of concern about the N97 mini’s construction.

Overall, then, we feel a whole lot warmer toward the Nokia N97 mini than we did toward the original N97. Its slimmed-down design and improved software have taken much of the sting out of ownership, and the compromises – the absence of an FM transmitter and the smaller onboard storage – are minor in comparison to the far better keyboard and sturdier build. Still, none of what it offers is quite a home-run in the smartphone game right now; the OS is improved but still feels drab and mildly clunky in comparison to rival platforms, and the QWERTY ‘board is a long way off the best we’ve played with in recent months.

Bizarrely, if they’ve beaten anything, Nokia have killed off enthusiasm for the N97; the two handsets will go on sale alongside each other, and the UK store even has the N97 mini at £429 and the original at £449. Having lived with the N97 mini we’re not sure why anybody would plump for the original, frankly. As for the mini itself, we must admit to being more enthusiastic about the Maemo OS and its potential than we are about this current device. Nokia obviously have some good ideas left in them, but the N97 mini feels like what the original N97 should have been, rather than a new product in its own right.

The Nokia N97 mobile phone is now available to buy from UK Nokia stores, being pitched directly against Apple's new iPhone 3G S in the battle for supremacy in the smartphone market.

Nokia's latest flagship handset, the N97, is joined by the Nokia 6700 Classic and the 8Mp Nokia N86 on its launch day, over six months after Which? reported on Nokia's specifications for the new N97 handset.

Which? has a preview of the N97 giving first impressions of its features prior to a full test in the Which? test labs.

Customers queued outside the Nokia Store on London's Regent Street to buy one of the first N97s, although as the N97 launch coincided with the launch of the Apple iPhone 3G S, its rival predictably attracted the majority of media coverage.

Which? tech expert Al Warman said: 'The 19 June 2009 will be remembered as the day that the Apple iPhone 3G S was launched, but the Nokia N97 has been eagerly awaited by many consumers who prefer Nokia smartphones to Apple mobiles, as not everyone wants to be tied to the O2 network or buy music through iTunes. This article is a review of the Nokia N97. I will compare its features with its biggest competitors in the mobile communication industry. Nokia N97, is a phone released by Nokia to compete with Apple’s iPhone 3G/3GS and HTC series. The phone is an improved version of Nokia 96 and with certain added features. This gadget is loaded with a number of applications and is the one of the best ‘smart phones’ currently available in the market. The sliding keyboard, for instance, is the USP of this gadget, its memory and multimedia features are bound to give its users an unforgettable experience for years to come.

Internet: This is the best feature of N97 in this category since it supports HTML, XHTML with RSS feed support. It has a whooping 32 GB inbuilt memory and 16 GB support from the micro SD card expandable up to 64 GB. The phone support both GSM and CDMA technologies. It allows 6.6 hours of GSM talk time and 7.1 on standby. Thus the device undoubtedly gets a 5 on 5 for the memory support it offers.

Thus overall Nokia N97 is an extremely cool phone with some unmatched features. The phone is available at a price tag of 700$ (approx.) which is a bit expensive in comparison with the mobiles available in this range. The Nokia N73 is a smartphone by Nokia officially described as a "multimedia computer". In common with other Nokia 'Nseries' and 'Eseries' phones of its time (late 2006), the N73 comes loaded with many software applications, including contacts, messaging, picture and video galleries, a music player, a Visual FM Radio, RealPlayer, an IM client, a WAP browser, a full web browser based on KHTML/WebKit, a Microsoft Office document viewer, a PDF viewer, an Adobe Flash Lite viewer and some games. The majority of these applications support background execution; for example, one may listen to music while browsing the Internet, and then may switch to write a text message or e-mail, without having to close any applications. With the exception of newer Sony Ericsson phones like K550 and W610, non 'smartphones' typically cannot do this or can do it in only a very limited way; for example, only the music player can run in the background. The feature which most distinguishes the N73 from other 'N'- or 'E'-series Nokia mobile phones is the 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera. The N73 does not support Wi-Fi.

Java applications as well as Symbian (S60 release 3) applications can be installed to or removed from the phone by the user, using either the Nokia PC Suite software, which is included with the phone, or the installer application on the phone itself. Notably, Nokia supports firmware upgrades to the N73 to be made by the user via a module in Nokia PC Suite or directly over-the-air. Since the N73 supports access via Bluetooth and USB Mass Storage (amongst other methods), it is possible to transfer large collections of files to and from it using any computer that also supports either Bluetooth or mass storage via USB (e.g. Microsoft Windows, Linux; Mac OS X etc.). The N73 uses a database system for the supplied 'Gallery' applications (which permanently run in the background, in order to reduce seek and operation times) and again these databases can be updated locally on the device itself. This means that supported image, video and audio files can be placed almost anywhere in the file system and browsed easily, and in the case of MP3 audio files, by ID3 tag (e.g. 'album'; 'artist' etc.).

Music Edition, Internet Edition and Special Edition
In addition to the basic N73, Nokia subsequently released the N73 'Music Edition'. It has technically the same hardware as the N73, but the 'multimedia button' on the keypad has been replaced with a button that starts the music player. The Music Edition also includes a 2GB memory card and the phone is completely black. The Music player on the Music Edition supports Album art and visualisations, while that on the regular N73 does not. It also has an improved control interface where 'play', 'pause', 'stop', 'next' and 'previous' may all be selected directly by simply pushing the phone joystick in the appropriate direction rather than having to scroll through on-screen buttons for these controls and then select them as on the ordinary N73. The Music Player application stays in the background at all time (even when music is not being played) in the Music Edition of N73. In the latest firmware versions this application can be terminated, but doing so prevents from using the Music Edition remote control to start listening to music, until the application is started again by using the phone's keypad.

N73
The 'N73 Internet Edition' was essentially the Music Edition, but retaining the 'multimedia button' function, rather than a dedicated 'music button'. The 'N73 Internet Edition' is not available in the Middle East and North Africa.

However, all three versions of the N73 appear to be being updated to have the same software as each other, essentially making them the exact same phone – the V4.0726.2.0.1 dated (26-06-2007) updates the standard N73's Music Player to the same version as the Music Edition's enhanced Music Player detailed above, while keeping the 'multimedia button' function, essentially making it an Internet Edition. Although Nokia N73 Software version 4.0735.3.0.2 & 4.0736.3.2.1 was released October 2007, some might not have availed this firmware version, because of limited actions to other countries.

As of 2008 the new firmware version of this smartphone (not ME) is V4.0812.4.0.1 (exclusively released for Asian phones) updates with the standard features still with Nokia Maps Application is installed by default. (Requires an external bluetooth GPS receiver.), Nokia Lifeblog, PTT, and Search applications carried on from the V4.0726.2.0.1 plus the latest addition is the Nokia Mobile TV application is also installed by default (Requires an external Nokia Mobile TV Receiver SU-33W) which is an application available on N77. The camera is much improved from earlier firmware. The phone now takes only 27 seconds to boot. It took 47+ seconds in earlier firmware. Also, the N73 has 20 MB of ram available after boot. A little change was users may not be able to install the N-Gage application which is modified to work in N73. Exceptionally making it better compared to ME because of its multimedia keypad rather than having only a single usage button, same features of Music Player like ME that supports Album art and visualizations, enhanced control interface and also available on start screen when menu key is pressed and hold after the phone boots up.

Later, June 2008 Nokia release firmware version 4.0823.4.4.1.which added improvements on its interface. 4.0839.42.0.1 was released on September 2008,which is a beta version of 4.0839.42.3.1 released same date and not available in some countries.

Also, during recent UK Nokia poster campaigns, the black (ME) version of the phone was advertised without the term 'Music Edition', and the O2 UK shop sells the N73 in both Silver/Plum and Black, with the Black version having the multimedia button rather than the music button.

Nokia has also released another model of the N73 called the 'N73 Special Edition' in the Middle East and North Africa. The phone was released during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in 2007. The phone has the same hardware as the other editions of the N73 but comes pre-loaded with Islamic applications and the phone is completely white.

Nokia also released N73 Special Edition in Indonesia without pre-loaded Islamic applications.

Reception

You know something is up when you receive a powerful smartphone and you don't rip open the box to make a phone call or try out an Excel spreadsheet. Instead you slide open the camera lens cover and madly take photos of anything remotely attractive or interesting. That's the Nokia N73: a camera that just happens to have a smartphone attached. If great photos aren't your thing, Nokia offers a wide variety of Symbian OS S60 phones with lesser cameras and other strong points such as the Nokia E61's QWERTY keyboard and the Nokia N91's 4 gig hard drive for MP3s aplenty. If quality photos are important, the N73 and its bulkier sibling the N93 (which lacks the 850MHz band used by Cingular in the US) are Nokia's top offerings. The Nokia N80 has a 3MP camera that's quite good (once you adjust to the shutter lag), and you'd likely be pretty impressed if you saw the photos it takes. That is, until you see the N73's photos. The N73 has a 3.2 megapixel camera and adds a Carl Zeiss autofocus lens which makes for sharper photos.

The N73 is one of Nokia's newest S60 3rd Edition phones and was released at the end of July 2006. It's shipping in Asia and in parts of Europe but is not sold in the US by any carrier. However it is sold by Nokia flagship stores, the Nokia USA web site and by importers unlocked for use with any GSM carrier. We picked up ours from phonesource-usa.com and received the Hong Kong version of the phone in two days. Should you pick up an Asian model, have no fear: it's a bilingual phone so you can set it to English (unless you prefer Simplified Chinese). On the number pad, the numbers 1 through 5 each have one Chinese stroke, but these aren't distracting. The phone does support predictive text in English as well. The Nokia is available in three color combinations: silver gray / deep plum (which we received), frost white / metallic red and frost white / mocha. The plum and mocha colors are complex, looking nearly dark gray to black with metallic highlights in darker locations but turning much more vibrant under direct light.

Features at a Glance
The Nokia N73 is a quad band GSM world phone which will work anywhere GSM service is available. It has EDGE and UMTS 3G on the 2100MHz band (for Europe, not the US), Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, 240 x 320 QVGA display, miniSD card slot, full PIM applications with easy syncing to Outlook (and the Mac with little trouble), MS Office document viewers, MP3 player, FM radio, stereo output, email client and a full HTML web browser.

In the Box
Nokia includes their stereo Pop-Port headset, world charger (prong adapter for US required), USB sync cable (CA-53), software CD with PC Suite and LifeBlog for Windows, a thick manual (even if the phone is an overseas model, Nokia always includes an English manual along with a manual in the localized language), Lithium Ion battery and (possibly) a 128 meg miniSD card (Nokia doesn't list this in their specs but one came in our box).

Design and Ergonomics
The N73 is one of Nokia's more normal looking smartphones. It has a straightforward candy bar design and an absolutely standard keypad. It looks more at home with recent MS Smartphones like the T-Mobile SDA and Cingular 2125 than the Nokia N80, N91 or N93. Like the SDA and 2125, a large QVGA display dominates the front face, and while the phone may lack the sexy looks of the N80 or the stainless steel machismo of the N91, the display itself is so eye-catching it gives the entire phone a turn to the stunning. Since normalcy abounds, the phone has a standard keypad with roomy blue backlit keys, a perfectly conformist 5 way joystick that's surrounded by the usual smartphone cluster of 2 softkeys and the call send and end keys. The application launcher, pencil, clear and multimedia applications launcher keys wrap around the keypad in the bright silver surround. All are easy to access and we're thankful the ever-important application launcher wasn't relegated to a side location as with the Nokia N91.

The Nokia N73 and N80

Like most other phones (but unlike most Nokias) the N73 has a volume rocker for both speaker sound and in-call volume on the right side (easy controlled by your right thumb when holding the phone in the right hand during a call), and this rocker does double-duty as the zoom control for the camera. The IR window is all by itself on the phone's left side, and stereo speakers under a post-modern looking metal grille are located at the top and bottom edges of the phone. The charger port (the smaller style one found on recent Nokia phones and the Nokia 770) is at the bottom as is the Pop-Port multifunction port (used for USB syncing and headsets). Turn the phone on its side and it becomes a camera, and in fact looks like a point-and-shoot. Slide the rear lens cover to expose the lens and LED flash and the camera application opens automatically. The slider stays firmly in place and lays against the phone's back in an interesting manner to accommodate the sloping lines of the phone. Slide the lens cover shut and the camera application exits automatically. There's a dedicated Gallery button beside the shutter button which allows you to quickly move through your photos in full-screen landscape mode.

Above the display you'll find the secondary VGA camera used for self-portraits and video conferencing in 3G service areas, the light sensor which automatically adjusts display brightness and the earpiece. the miniSD slot is located on the bottom edge parallel to the Pop-Port connector and the card is hot-swappable. As you'd expect, the battery lives under a door on the phone's back and the SIM card is under the battery. The phone feels and looks very well made, perhaps a bit more so than the N80 (which is indeed well made but looks and feels like the plastic it is). The N73 is mid-to-large sized by feature phone standards and small by smartphone standards. It's smaller than the Treo 700p and 700w, Nokia 7610, Nokia 6682 and all Windows Mobile Pocket PC phones on the market and is similar in size to the Cingular 2125 and T-Mobile SDA MS Smartphones.

Phone Features, Data and Reception
The Nokia N73 has top notch reception, and is among the strongest RF phones. We tested it both on Cingular's 850MHz network and T-Mobile's 1900MHz network in the US. Both incoming and outgoing voice are clear with no distortion, static or other unpleasant audio artifacts. Call recipients commented on how good we sounded, and incoming volume through the earpiece is good, though not deafening. Clarity and volume are excellent through the included Pop-Port stereo headset and is a perfect match for loud places (as is the speakerphone). Like other S60 3rd Edition Nokia phones, the N73 comes with Nokia's voice command software which offers speaker independent speech recognition and dialing (though it does claim to fine tune to your voice over time). As with other S60 3rd Edition phones, it works OK, though its accuracy doesn't compare to Voice Signal software or MS VoiceCommand on Windows Mobile. However, it's definitely better than the N80, which was at best 50-50 for us. In addition the N73 has speed dialing and support for call waiting, conference calls and caller photo ID.

Even in the US where we must rely on EDGE, the N73 is a fast phone for data, getting 150K on average using Cingular's MEdiaNet service. For those of you in Europe or those who visit there, the phone has 3G (WCDMA UMTS) on the 2100MHz band (in the US we use the 850 and 1900MHz bands for both voice and data, including 3G). The phone will automatically switch between GSM and UMTS networks where applicable and can fall back to good old slow GPRS if neither EDGE or UMTS are available.

(Please note: The messaging and email applications on the N73, N80, N91 and N93 are identical, so you'll notice great similarity in these sections of our review). The Messaging application supports POP3 and IMAP email as well as SMS and MMS messages. If you leave the Messaging application running, it will automatically check for new mail and notify you (it retrieves headers only until you tell it to download the full message) and it does not support push email (consider the Nokia 9300 or Nokia E61 if you need push email, particularly BlackBerry Connect). In addition Nokia includes an IM client, but it's not for AIM or MSN out of the box- you'll need IM support from your carrier (this doesn't exist in the US) or use a service like yamigo.com. Alternatively, download Agile Messenger and install it for turnkey IM support on MSN, AIM, Yahoo and ICQ.

Nokia's new web browser which uses Safari technology is the real star among included Internet applications. This browser, found on all S60 3rd Edition devices simply beats the pants off of other PDA and smartphone browsers including Blazer on Palm OS and Internet Explorer Mobile on Windows Mobile 5. It even beats the full version of Opera (not Opera Mini which is a more minimalist browser). It's fast, renders faithfully in desktop layout mode and very quickly in one column optimized view. The browser handles tables, JavaScript and even dHTML well and it supports multiple windows. It has a page overview mode which shows you the entire web page with an inset box you can move the joystick to zoom to the normal view of that part of the page. For those who've used Thunderhawk, the concept is similar. The browser even has an RSS feed reader! The phone also has a WAP browser (the Services icon). This is the one the phone uses when opening URLs in emails.

What is CSS?
CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets and is a simple styling language which allows attaching style to HTML elements. Every element type as well as every occurance of a specific element within that type can be declared an unique style, e.g. margins, positioning, color or size.

What is external Style Sheet? How to link?
External Style Sheet is a template/document/file containing style information which can be linked with any number of HTML documents. This is a very convenient way of formatting the entire site as well as restyling it by editing just one file.
The file is linked with HTML documents via the LINK element inside the HEAD element. Files containing style information must have extension .css, e.g. style.css.

What is imported Style Sheet? How to link?
Imported Style Sheet is a sheet that can be imported to (combined with) another sheet. This allows creating one main sheet containing declarations that apply to the whole site and partial sheets containing declarations that apply to specific elements (or documents) that may require additional styling. By importing partial sheets to the main sheet a number of sources can be combined into one.

To import a style sheet or style sheets include the @import notation or notations in the STYLE element. The @import notations must come before any other declaration. If more than one sheet is imported they will cascade in order they are imported - the last imported sheet will override the next last; the next last will override the second last, and so on. If the imported style is in conflict with the rules declared in the main sheet then it will be overridden.

Alternate Style Sheet is a sheet defining an alternate style to be used in place of style(s) declared as persistent and/or preferred .
Persistent style is a default style that applies when style sheets are enabled but can disabled in favor of an alternate style, e.g.:

What is CSS rule 'ruleset'?
There are two types of CSS rules: ruleset and at-rule. Ruleset identifies selector or selectors and declares style which is to be attached to that selector or selectors. For example P {text-indent: 10pt} is a CSS rule. CSS rulesets consist of two parts: selector, e.g. P and declaration, e.g. {text-indent: 10pt}.

What is CSS rule 'at-rule'?
There are two types of CSS rules: ruleset and at-rule. At-rule is a rule that applies to the whole style sheet and not to a specific selector only (like in ruleset). They all begin with the @ symbol followed by a keyword made up of letters a-z, A-Z, digits 0-9, dashes and escaped characters, e.g. @import or @font-face.

What is selector?
CSS selector is equivalent of HTML element(s). It is a string identifying to which element(s) the corresponding declaration(s) will apply and as such the link between the HTML document and the style sheet.
For example in P {text-indent: 10pt} the selector is P and is called type selector as it matches all instances of this element type in the document.

in P, UL {text-indent: 10pt} the selector is P and UL (see grouping); in .class {text-indent: 10pt} the selector is .class (see class selector).

What is CLASS selector?
Class selector is a "stand alone" class to which a specific style isdeclared. Using the CLASS attribute the declared style can then beassociated with any HTML element. The class selectors are created by a period followed by the class's name. The name can contain characters a-z, A-Z, digits 0-9, period, hyphen, escaped characters, Unicode characters 161-255, as well as any Unicode character as a numeric code, however, they cannot start with a dash or a digit. (Note: in HTML the value of the CLASS attribute can contain more characters).It is a good practice to name classes according to their function than their appearance.

What is ID selector?
ID selector is an individually identified (named) selector to which a specific style is declared. Using the ID attribute the declared style can then be associated with one and only one HTML element per document as to differentiate it from all other elements. ID selectors are created by a character # followed by the selector's name. What is contextual selector?
Contextual selector is a selector that addresses specific occurrence of an element. It is a string of individual selectors separated by white space, a search pattern, where only the last element in the pattern is addressed providing it matches the specified context.

What is attribute selector? [CSS2]
Attribute selector is a selector defined by 1) the attribute set to element(s), 2) the attribute and value(s), 3) the attribute and value parts:
1a) A[title] {text-decoration: underline}
All A elements containing the TITLE attribute will be underlined
1b) A[class=name] {text-decoration: underline}
The A elements classed as 'name' will be underlined
2) A[title="attribute element"] {text-decoration: underline}

What is parent-child selector? [CSS2]
Parent-child selector is a selector representing the direct descendent of a parent element. Parent-child selectors are created by listing two or more tilde (~) separated selectors.
BODY ~ P {background: red; color: white}
The P element will be declared the specified style only if it directly descends from the BODY element:

What is CSS declaration?
CSS declaration is style attached to a specific selector. It consists of two parts; property which is equivalent of HTML attribute, e.g. text-indent: and value which is equivalent of HTML value, e.g. 10pt. NOTE: properties are always ended with a colon.

What is 'important' declaration?
Important declaration is a declaration with increased weight. Declaration with increased weight will override declarations with normal weight. If both reader's and author's style sheet contain statements with important declarations the author's declaration will override the reader's.

What is property?
Property is a stylistic parameter (attribute) that can be influenced through CSS, e.g. FONT or WIDTH. There must always be a corresponing value or values set to each property, e.g. font: bold or font: bold san-serif.

What is shorthand property?
Shorthand property is a property made up of individual properties that have a common "addressee". For example properties: font-weight, font-style, font-variant, font-size, font-family, refer to the font. To reduce the size of style sheets and also save some keystrokes as well as bandwidth they can all be specified as one shorthand property font, e.g.:

What is value?
Value is a 'physical' characteristic of the property. Property declares what should be formatted, e.g. FONT while value suggests how the property should be formatted, e.g. 12pt. By setting the value 12pt to the property FONT it is suggested that the formatted text be displayed in a 12 point font. There must always be a corresponding property to each value or set of values.

In the example above the H1 selector is declared the FONT property which in its turn is declared the values BOLD and 180%.
The values suggesting alternatives are specified in a comma separated list, e.g.

What is initial value?
Initial value is a default value of the property, that is the value given to the root element of the document tree. All properties have an initial value. If no specific value is set and/or if a property is not inherited the initial value is used. For example the background property is not inherited, however, the background of the parent element shines through because the initial value of background property is transparent.

Can I attach more than one declaration to a selector?
Yes. If more than one declaration is attached to a selector they must appear in a semi colon separated list, e.g.;

What is class?
Class is a group of 1) instances of the same element to which an unique style can be attached or 2) instances of different elements to which the same style can be attached.
1) The rule P {color: red} will display red text in all paragraphs. By classifying the selector P different style can be attached to each class allowing the display of some paragraphs in one style and some other paragraphs in another style.
2) A class can also be specified without associating a specific element to it and then attached to any element which is to be styled in accordance with it's declaration. All elements to which a specific class is attached will have the same style.
To classify an element add a period to the selector followed by an unique name. The name can contain characters a-z, A-Z, digits 0-9, period, hyphen, escaped characters, Unicode characters 161-255, as well as any Unicode character as a numeric code, however, they cannot start with a dash or a digit. What is grouping
Grouping is gathering (1) into a comma separated list two or more selectors that share the same style or (2) into a semicolon separated list two or more declarations that are attached to the same selector (2).
1. The selectors LI, P with class name .first and class .footnote share the same style, e.g.:
LI {font-style: italic} P.first {font-style: italic} .footnote {font-style: italic}
To reduce the size of style sheets and also save some typing time they can all be grouped in one list.

What are pseudo-elements?
Pseudo-elements are fictional elements that do not exist in HTML. They address the element's sub-part (non-existent in HTML) and not the element itself. In CSS1 there are two pseudo-elements: 'first-line pseudo-element' and 'first-letter pseudo-element'. They can be attached to block-level elements (e.g. paragraphs or headings) to allow typographical styling of their sub-parts. Pseudo-element is created by a colon followed by pseudo-element's name, e.g:

What are pseudo-classes?
Pseudo-classes are fictional element types that do not exist in HTML. In CSS1 there is only one element type which can be classed this way, namely the A element (anchor). By creating three fictional types of the A element individual style can be attached to each class. These three fictional element types are: A as unvisited link, A as active link and A as visited link. Pseudo-classes are created by a colon followed by pseudo-class's name. They can also be combined with normal classes, e.g.:

What is cascade?
Cascade is a method of defining the weight (importance) of individual styling rules thus allowing conflicting rules to be sorted out should such rules apply to the same selector.
Declarations with increased weight take precedence over declaration with normal weight:

What is cascading order?
Cascading order is a sorting system consisting of rules by which declarations are sorted out so that there are not conflicts as to which declaration is to influence the presentation. The sorting begins with rule no 1. If a match is found the search is over. If there is no match under rule no 1 the search continues under rule no 2 and so on.
1. Find all declarations that apply to a specific selector/property
  and
  Declare the specified style if the selector matches the element
  if there isn't any
  Let the element inherit its parent property
  if there isn't any
  Use initial value
2. Sort by weight (! important)
  Increased weight take precedence over normal weight
3. Sort by origin
  Rules with normal weight declared in author's style sheet will override rules with normal weight declared in user's personal style sheets
  Rules with increased weight declared in user's personal style sheet will override rules with normal weight declared in author's style sheet
  Rules with increased weight declared in author's style sheet will override rules with increased weight declared in user's personal style sheets
  Author's and user's rules will override UA's default style sheet.
4. Sort by selector's specificity
  More specific selector will override less specific one:
  ID-selector (most specific), followed by
  Classified contextual selectors (TABLE P EM.fot)
  Class selectors (EM.fot)
  Contextual selectors - the "lower down" the more weight, (TABLE P EM), (TABLE P EM STRONG) - STRONG has more weight than EM.
5. Sort by order specified
  If two rules have the same weight, the latter specified overrides ones specified earlier. Style sheets are sorted out as follows:
  The STYLE attribute (inline style) overrides all other styles
  The Style element (embedded style) overrides linked and imported sheets
  The LINK element (external style) overrides imported style
  The @import statement - imported style sheets also cascade with each other in the same order as they are imported

How does inheritance work?
HTML documents are structured hierarchically. There is an ancestor, the toplevel element, the HTML element, from which all other elements (children)are descended. As in any other family also children of the HTML family caninherit their parents, e.g. color or size.
By letting the children inherit their parents a default style can be createdfor top level elements and their children. (Note: not all properties can be inherited). The inheritance starts at the oldest ancestor and is passed on to its children and then their children and the children's children and so on.
Inherited style can be overridden by declaring specific style to childelement. For example if the EM element is not to inherit its parent P thenown style must be declared to it. For example:
BODY {font-size: 10pt} All text will be displayed in a 10 point font
BODY {font-size: 10pt} H1 {font-size: 14pt} or H1 {font-size: 180%}
All text except for the level 1 headings will be displayed in a 10 point font. H1 will be displayed in a 14 point font (or in a font that is 80% larger than the one set to BODY). If the element H1 contains other elements, e.g. EM then the EM element will also be displayed in a 14 point font (or 180%) it will inherit the property of the parent H1. If the EM element is to be displayed in some other font then own font properties must be declared to it, e.g:
BODY {font-size: 10pt} H1 {font-size: 14pt} or H1 {font-size: 180%} EM {font-size: 15pt} or EM {font-size: 110%}
The EM element will be displayed in a 15 point font or will be 10% larger than H1. NOTE: EM is, in this example, inside H1 therefore will inherit H1's properties and not BODY's.

Are Style Sheets case sensitive?
No. Style sheets are case insensitive. Whatever is case insensitive in HTML is also case insensitive in CSS. However, parts that are not under control of CSS like font family names and URLs can be case sensitive - IMAGE.gif and image.gif is not the same file.

What’s the Difference Between HTML and XHTML

I just got an email from a budding web-designer friend that said:

What the hell is the difference between XHTML and HTML?!?!? Am I just stupid? Is
it hard to switch over? I don’t even know what the hay I’m talking about.

I replied back with a quick off-the-cuff comparison between the two - the
differences and the reasons the two standards exist - and thought other people
might benefit. So, I’m posting it here.

Now, I don’t profess to be an expert, and I’m sure there are plenty of nuances
I’ve overlooked. Feel free to contribute in the comments, but keep in mind that
I’m purposely making this explanation as simple as possible and leaving out the
gory details.

It’s a tricky question to answer, but here goes . . .

There’s a computer language (not programming language!) called XML. It stands
for extensible markup language. Basically, it’s just a standard way of storing
data (such as a payroll report, a web page, the number of cows in your barn,
anything) that can be easily read by people and parsed (understood) by
computers. Take a look at this XML code I’m making up on the spot . . .

Basically, that says I have a farm with a Barn and a Field. The barn has 10
horses and some tools (a hammer and two shovels). There’s also a field with 8
cows and 30 pigs.

That make sense? It’s a very basic example, but it shows how you can use XML to
store any sort of data you want. It just has to follow the proper structure.

Ok, so that’s XML in a (very small) nutshell.

HTML was created in the early 90’s by Tim Berners-Lee (before XML was invented)
as a way to describe web pages. It worked great. It was easy to read, easy to
write, and computers could understand it, too.

(Ok, I’m totally gonna botch this next part.) People thought, hey, if HTML works
great for describing web pages, lets “formalize” the language so that we can use
that style to store any type of data we want. And so, XML was born. Basically,
they took the look of HTML and added a few rules about how you were supposed to
write it. That’s why HTML looks like XML and vice versa.

Ok, now for XHTML. A few years after XML caught on (at this time people were
still building websites with HTML), the W3C (the governing body of HTML) decided
they should make a “new” version of HTML that was “proper” XML. In other words,
even though HTML looked like XML, there were still places in HTML were it didn’t
follow the newly defined XML specification. (And that makes sense since HTML
came before XML.)

So, XHTML is a new version of HTML that is valid XML code. There’s not a huge
difference between XHTML and HTML. The biggest thing is that all your tags must
have a matching closing tag. For example, you know that when you create a link
the opening <a> has a matching </a>. But what about the tag? You don’t
write some text do you? But according to the rules of XML, each tag has
to have a matching closing tag. So, in XHTML you now have to write your 
tags like . That’s called a “self-closing” tag.

In addition to requiring every tag to have a closing tag (or be self-closing),
they also got rid of some old tags and attributes that had been replaced by CSS.
For example, the tag is no longer allowed. And the width attributes in
tags, like <table width=”50%”>, is gone, too. There are too many little changes
like this to name here, but I think that should give you an idea.

So, which one do you use? HTML or XHTML? It doesn’t really matter since there’s
a competing HTML5 standard on it’s way that will compete with XHTML (yes, our
lives just got more complicated). Here’s what I do . . .

Declare your pages to be XHTML1. That way, the browser knows how to read them.
Then, run your pages through the W3C XHTML Validator2 to make sure you code is
correct. Also, make sure you adhere to proper “modern” web design principles
like you’re doing already:

Use CSS for formatting and layout
Don’t use tables for layout
No old/deprecated tags like , etc.

Do all that and you’ll be fine. As for the upcoming HTML5, well, that’s
something all web designers will have to worry about together when it happens.

What is HTML?

HTML is a computer language devised to allow website creation. These websites can then be viewed by anyone else connected to the Internet. It is relatively easy to learn, with the basics being accessible to most people in one sitting; and quite powerful in what it allows you to create. It is constantly undergoing revision and evolution to meet the demands and requirements of the growing Internet audience under the direction of the » W3C, the organisation charged with designing and maintaining the language.

The definition of HTML is HyperText Markup Language.

HyperText is the method by which you move around on the web — by clicking on special text called hyperlinks which bring you to the next page. The fact that it is hyper just means it is not linear — i.e. you can go to any place on the Internet whenever you want by clicking on links — there is no set order to do things in.

Markup is what HTML tags do to the text inside them. They mark it as a certain type of text (italicised text, for example).

HTML is a Language, as it has code-words and syntax like any other language.

How does it work?

HTML consists of a series of short codes typed into a text-file by the site author — these are the tags. The text is then saved as a html file, and viewed through a browser, like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. This browser reads the file and translates the text into a visible form, hopefully rendering the page as the author had intended. Writing your own HTML entails using tags correctly to create your vision. You can use anything from a rudimentary text-editor to a powerful graphical editor to create HTML pages.

What are the tags up to?

The tags are what separate normal text from HTML code. You might know them as the words between the . They allow all the cool stuff like images and tables and stuff, just by telling your browser what to render on the page. Different tags will perform different functions. The tags themselves don’t appear when you view your page through a browser, but their effects do. The simplest tags do nothing more than apply formatting to some text, like this:

These words will be bold, and these will not.

In the example above, the tags were wrapped around some text, and their effect will be that the contained text will be bolded when viewed through an ordinary web browser.

Is this going to take long?

Well, it depends on what you want from it. Knowing HTML will take only a few days of reading and learning the codes for what you want. You can have the basics down in an hour. Once you know the tags you can create HTML pages.

However, using HTML and designing good websites is a different story, which is why I try to do more than just teach you code here at HTMLSource — I like to add in as much advice as possible too. Good website design is half skill and half talent, I reckon. Learning techniques and correct use of your tag knowledge will improve your work immensely, and a good understanding of general design and the audience you’re trying to reach will improve your website’s chances of success. Luckily, these things can be researched and understood, as long as you’re willing to work at it so you can output better websites.

The range of skills you will learn as a result of running your own website is impressive. You’ll learn about aspects of graphic design, typography and computer programming. Your efficiency with computers in general increases.You’ll also learn about promotion and your writing will probably improve too, as you adapt to write for certain audiences.

Do I have to be online all the time?

Not at all. You can code your entire website offline, storing it all on your own computer, and then just transfer all the files onto the web. Then whenever you have new content, you just add that to the existing online version of your site. It’s really quite simple.

Is there anything HTML can’t do?

Of course, but since making websites became more popular and needs increased many other supporting languages have been created to allow new stuff to happen, plus HTML is modified every few years to make way for improvements.

Cascading Stylesheets are used to control how your pages are presented, and make pages more accessible. Basic special effects and interaction is provided by JavaScript, which adds a lot of power to basic HTML. Most of this advanced stuff is for later down the road, but when using all of these technologies together, you have a lot of power at your disposal.

You can download new free e-books from online sites using your PC/Lap Top and transfer it to your N73 using the desktop version of MobiPocket Reader. Also you can convert your existing documents. Either PDF or MS Office documents can be converted. The fonts are easy on the eyes too. A must have utility, if you like reading books in journeys.

Someone said, “You’re not a true SEO until you’ve been banned at least once!” Of course, I do not intend to say that every SEO guy should get banned. I know it sucks. But sometimes it helps to understand the finer lines when your site is banned.

Search engine penalties and banning are not the topics that are discussed frequently by webmasters, except those who are proud to call themselves blackhat. But many times, I have seen people getting confused with low SERP rankings and banning. Just because your site is not ranking in Google for a certain keyword(s), which was a traffic puller earlier, does not necessarily mean that your site has been banned.

Remember, Google is CRAZY! It is extremely choosy about the quality (and quantity) of your links. You can try an exercise to believe this. Try searching for your backlinks using Yahoo Site Explorer and the link:http://sitename.com command in Google. What do you see? I am sure you got my point now.

How to achieve sitelinks for your website.

SEO is not easy. It takes lot of efforts for achieving high search engine rankings and maintaining them. We at CopperBridge Media, get many inquiries from our clients as to why search engines do not display their site’s one line links (read sitelinks). Well, it sounds a bit funny at times. Because after helping their sites dominate the first page of major search engines, they still aspire for more search engine visibility.

Now the SEOs / webmasters will know that with consistent efforts a site can achieve top rankings. But unfortunately, that’s not the case with sitelinks. Webmasters have absolutely no control when it comes to displaying the sitelinks.

Regular Google Sitelinks

Though Yahoo and Bing too offer sitelinks, but of course the inventor of the concept of sitelinks is Google. It introduced sitelinks to help users navigate a site so that it saves users time and allows them to quickly find the information they’re looking for.

How to get sitelinks on Google?

I wish I could give you a simple solution for this. But that’s because you can’t force Google to show the desired links of your site as sitelinks. Google explains, “We only show sitelinks for results when we think they’ll be useful to the user. If the structure of your site doesn’t allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don’t think that the sitelinks for your site are relevant for the user’s query, we won’t show them.”

Okay so as always, Google speaks from its own perspective with no help to the webmasters. But based on my observations for achieving sitelinks, here are a few tips that I can pass on:

Submit your site to all major search engines. Don’t wait for their crawlers to find you.
Monitor which pages of your site are attracting huge traffic. Normally, these pages would be the best candidates for being featured as sitelinks.
Keep working on your most viewed pages, i.e. optimize them. Put more focus on keyword density, content relevance and optimization.
Follow proper page naming conventions and keep a simple navigation structure for your site. I have seen that the sitelinks are mostly a copy of the links in the site’s navigation structure.
Cleverly follow cross linking strategy from your most viewed pages. This will ensure that other relevant pages also appear in the sitelinks for a single query.

Now a days, Google displays one-line sitelinks. These are not different from the regular sitelinks, except that they are displayed in only one column and allow a maximum of four links to be displayed.

Google One-line sitelinks

Even though, Google says its process for generating sitelinks is completely automated, you can surely help Google locate the most relevant pages of your site so that they appear as sitelinks. Use your SEO skills along with the tips mentioned above and see what happens.

Just in case, you think that Google is displaying inappropriate or incorrect sitelinks, you can block them so that they no longer appear. But for this, you will have to have your site registered with the Google Webmaster Central Tools.

Chris Brogan kills the Rockstars Page.

Chris Brogan recently announced that he had taken down the Rockstars page from his blog. The Rockstars page had a collection of websites/blogs that were submitted by Chris’s readers. Chris explains,

The intent was to have a big huge page of links featuring all of you, because I truly believe the blog is about you and our interactions together. The thing is, it’s just a lot of work to manage, and I don’t see hardly ANY clicks to it any month. No one really looks in there for anything.

His intention to highlight the people belonging to his community did catch fire when he had announced the Rockstars campaign. It was a nice inbound marketing campaign wherein people were asked (not forced) to add the Rockstar badges to their blogs after their inclusion. The badges were attractive and easy to use. It was a kind of link exchange strategy to gather inbound links. But it somehow failed.

I am thinking of writing a post about failed inbound marketing campaigns. Please share examples of such campaigns, if you know them.

Is Lifestreaming killing Blogging?

I have been a fan of Copyblogger since quite some time now and love the way Brian creates great content. One of Brian’s recent post discusses whether blogs are a part of the social media or not. While reading his post, a new thought triggered my brain. The thought was, “whether lifestreaming has killed blogging?”

I remember, around 12 months ago, people were crazy about getting a free blog from Blogger or Wordpress. Blogging allowed them to express themselves and gave them great satisfaction, since they were sharing their feelings with the world. But with time things change. While some bloggers remained active, others dropped out, simply because they did not generate enough readership to keep the comments and conversation rolling. The resulting frustration was enough for them to never look back at their blog, again.

And today, with tools like Twitter, Friendfeed, Posterous, etc. lifestreaming has appealed to masses. People prefer to use these services because it takes less time to express yourself. It also allows them to track real time updates and helps in establishing a connection easily. Sometimes, there are things which one cannot express on a blog regularly, say like what I had for lunch or at what time do I exercise, etc. But with lifestreaming, all these things are possible as you can pass on the crappiest of your act to the bunch of people who have nothing better to do than admire your updates.

Don’t get me wrong but I have lived both blogging and lifestreaming. And somehow blogging makes me more happy as I can target my posts in such a way that they benefit my readers.

I was very surprised when Steve Rubel quit blogging to embrace lifestreaming. I somehow just fail to understand how someone can get his message through just 140 characters. Maybe that’s one of the tricks that I need to master to increase my twitter following!

Chris Brogan’s explains this scenario by drawing an analogy between the two by saying - “There’s a difference between making a meal and grabbing a snack. Eating only snacks can lead to us getting flabby.“

Lifestreaming does provide more speed and action to a conversation than blogging but sometimes this can go offtrack. Its like somebody starts discussing about a football match, praises the team coach, digs his personal history and the discussion moves on. As you can see in this case, the conversation about the match lost its importance, maybe because the history of the coach was more attractive. With blogging this condition will never arise as it contains a targeted message.

To conclude, I would re-iterate that I prefer to blog than lifestream. What about you?

Is Windows 7 the Best Microsoft Operating System?

Windows 7 is the newest Operating System that is being offered by Microsoft. In checking out this new operating system you should be aware that it is not actually a full release as of yet. In other words you can download, for free, the release candidate of the software, but you cannot buy it in the stores. This also means that it is considered beta software, something that is not fully tested. By October of 2009 the full release will be available assuming nothing changes between now and then.

Disadvantage of old Windows Operating Systems
The problem with all Windows Operating Systems is they all want more resources to run, that are more simply stated that they prefer to have a lot more memory and hard drive space. That trend however is reversed with the Windows 7 Release Candidate(RC). It is an OS that has been designed to meet the needs of the users and is designed in response to all the feedback of the common users. In other words it is designed with people, not computer techs, in mind.

Update after update until the creation of Windows 7
Windows XP has been around for quite a while and due to all the updates that it has, it is now the most stable of all the current Windows operating systems. Vista has been out for some time and with some of its updates it comes a close second. The facts are that Microsoft is working to make a more effective operating system all the time. The fact that they have had to go through update after update has prompted the creation of Windows 7. It is designed to use fewer resources and therefore be more responsive than any other Operating system before. No more does WWW have to stand for World Wide Wait with Windows 7.

Enhancements of Windows 7
There are a number of enhancements over the Vista design that make it even easier to use than other operating systems have been. It has an easy to use toolbar at the bottom of the screen and has made strides in protecting programs from each other. No more will one program totally crash your computer requiring multiple restarts. Such was the legacy of all Windows Operating Systems, Windows XP being notorious for having to be restarted over and over.

Should I try the Release Candidate of Windows 7?
If you are having no issues with your current Operating System then you might be better off not trying this beta software. While the advantages it offers are vast, if you have a stable and working computer, you might as well stay with what you are familiar with until the full release is out. If, on the other hand, you are dissatisfied with your current OS, and would like to have something better, then you would do well to download and run the new Windows 7.

How to work with Internet Explorer 8?
Either way you might want to work with Internet Explorer 8. It is an updated version of IE that is much more stable. When it runs into a bad screen it does not crash completely, it can simply close the tab that has the bad page and keep running,. This can be a great time saver as you do not have to spend time re-loading your browser over and over. It is also far safer than any version of IE to date and you do not have to get Window 7 to get IE 8. Getting both is however even safer for those that constantly are in the Internet browsing in waters that often come filled with sharks. IE8 is like the shark cage, you can see the sharks but they do not affect you.

Nokia N96 is the latest Nokia smartphone in the Nseries range of products. It is the official successor to Nokia N95.

The handset was publicly announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 2008, and started shipping in September 2008. The Nokia N95 (N95-1, internally known as RM-159) is a smartphone produced by Nokia. The N95's functions include those of a camera phone and portable media player, in addition to offering e-mail, web browsing, local Wi-Fi connectivity and text messaging. It is part of the company's Nseries line of smartphones. The N95 runs on Symbian OS v9.2, with an S60 3rd Edition platform with Feature Pack 1. The phone uses a two-way slider to access either media playback buttons or a numeric keypad. Three newer versions have also been released: the upgraded N95 with 8GB internal memory, the N95 3G, which adds 3G support for North American compatibility, and the N95-4, which is intended solely for North-American markets. The N95 is succeeded by the Nokia N96 smartphone.

Integrated GPS Ability
The N95 contains an integrated GPS receiver which is located below the 0 key on the keypad. The phone ships with Nokia Maps navigation software. Maps are free and can be downloaded either over the air (via a carrier's data packet network) or through the phone's built-in WiFi. Maps can also be downloaded via a PC using the Nokia MapLoader application. To use voice navigation within Nokia Maps a license needs to be purchased from Nokia. Individual city guides are also available for purchase. A-GPS was later added in firmware, which greatly improved the GPS locking time.

Out of the box, the N95 supports audio in MP3, WMA, RealAudio, SP-MIDI, AAC+, eAAC+, MIDI, AMR and M4A formats. Its two-way slide, when opened towards the keypad, allows access to its media playback buttons. A standard 3.5 mm jack is located on the left side of the phone and allows the user to connect any standard headphones to the unit. Users can also use Bluetooth for audio output using A2DP, or use the built-in stereo speakers. The N95 is also capable of playing video in 3GP, MPEG4, RealVideo and in newer firmware, Flash Video formats. All of the phone's video output can also be played through the TV-out feature. TV-out is a feature offered by the phones OMAP processor, that allows users to connect the smartphone, using the supplied cable, to a TV or any other composite video input. Its main purpose is to allow users to show photos and videos on a large screen. The N95's built in UPnP capabilities also allow the user to share the phones' media over a WLAN network. This provides easy access to the photos, music and videos stored on the phone, from other UPnP capable devices on the network, enabling them to be watched or downloaded over the air.

The N95 has built-in Wi-Fi, with which it can access the Internet (through a 802.11b/g wireless network). The N95 can also connect to the Internet through a carrier packet data network such as UMTS, HSDPA, or EDGE. The web browser displays full web pages as opposed to simplified pages as on most other phones. Web pages may be viewed in portrait or landscape mode and automatic zooming is supported. The N95 also has Bluetooth built in and works with wireless earpieces that use Bluetooth 2.0 technology and for file transfer.It should be noted that the original N95 does not support US based versions of UMTS/HSDPA; UMTS features in these versions of the phone are disabled by default. Furthermore, the later N95 US versions support only AT&T's 850/1900 MHz UMTS/HSDPA bands, neither 1700 MHz of T-Mobile USA nor 2100 MHz bands are supported internationally.The phone can also act as a WAN access point allowing a tethered PC access to a carrier's packet data network. VoIP software and functionality is also included with the phone (though some carriers have opted to remove this feature).

Accelerometer
The N95 includes a built-in accelerometer. This was originally only used for video stabilization and photo orientation (to keep landscape or portrait shots oriented as taken).Nokia Research Center has allowed an application interface directly to the accelerometer, allowing software to use the data from it. Nokia has released a step counter application to demonstrate this.[10][11] Another Nokia-created application taking advantage of the accelerometer is Nokia Sports Tracker.Third-party programs have been created, including software that will automatically change the screen orientation when the phone is tilted, programs that simulate the sounds of a Star Wars lightsaber[12] when the phone is waved through the air, allow you to mute the phone by turning it face-down, and many more.
